Welcome to North London's

Love Food Hate Waste website

The Love Food Hate Waste campaign is a national initiative designed to provide practical information to help people make the most of the food they buy, and waste less of it. The campaign provides tips on avoiding food waste including advice on portion control.

The North London Waste Authority (NLWA) and its constituent boroughs (Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Hackney, Haringey, Islington and Waltham Forest) are committed to helping residents save money and make the most of their food.

The food lovers' cookbook

A cookery book featuring winning recipes from residents and restaurants
across north London has been produced as a result of a recipe competition to showcase a range of sizzling meals and snacks made from leftovers.

The Food Lovers' Cookbook gives leftovers including cooked pasta, stale bread and even used tea bags a new lease of life as they are transformed into a series of starters, mains and desserts by 26 budding chefs from across north London. To download a free copy please click here.

If you have downloaded The Food Lovers' Cookbook, or received a hard copy, we'd love to hear what you think. Click here to give your feedback.

Workshops

During north London's 2009 Love Food Hate Waste campaign, we ran a series of FREE community kitchen workshops and 'Cook & Taste' sessions in Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Hackney, Haringey, Islington and Waltham Forest. Thank you to those who attended these fantastic sessions, we hope you had fun and learned something new!

Top tips

for reducing food waste

Take the stress out of cooking by planning weekly menus. That way there will always be things in the fridge and cupboards to make delicious meals.

Using the freezer more often for multi-buys means we can buy bigger packs of meat or fish when it’s cheaper, but divide it into freeze-able portions to eat later.

Start writing a shopping list - research from the Love Food Hate Waste campaign shows that half of us have good intentions and make a list.

There really is such a thing as a free lunch if we simply use what’s already in the fridge, or last night’s leftovers for a packed lunch at work.

Use the Love Food Hate Waste portion planner to ensure you buy and cook just the right amount at mealtimes.
